During this training school the ESRs acquired knowledge about the cutting-edge diagnostic techniques and instruments that are used to diagnose ASD and emergent ADHD in toddlers. This week-long cours provided an overview on typical and atypical brain development. Special attention was given to topics such as brain development in human and non-human primates, brain cytoarchitecture, metabolism and connectivity in typical and atypical development. The course was divided in two parts. The first one took place at Birkbeck university and covered the following topics:

  • From synapse to brain: modelling Autism by Dr. Laura Andreae.
  • Social Brain Development in Early Autism by Dr. Emily Jones.
  • Early Adverse Environment and Brain Development by Dr. Przemysław Tomalski.
  • Environmental parthways to psychopathology: Biological insights from discordant identical twins by Dr. Emma Meaburn.
  • Magnetic Resonance Imaging of the Developing Brain: recent advances by Prof. Mary Rutherford.
  • Overview of the Near-Infrared Spectroscopy system and its data Analysis  by Dr. Anna Blasi.
  • EEG Bootcamp: introduction to Fieldtrip/EEGlab by Rianne Haartsen.
  • Introduction to wavelets; theory and methods by Anna Kolesnik.
  • Connectivity Demo and Theory by Rianne Haartsen.

 

During the second part of the training the ESRs underwent a series of courses at King's College London, which included:

  • 22q11ds as a risk model for neurodevelopmental disorders, insights from imaging by Maria Gudbrandsen.
  • Brain chemistry in ASD: MRS and PET approaches by Dr. Jamie Horder and Dr. Andreina Mendez
  • Studying the early formation of networks with simultaneous EEG-FMRI in infancy by Dr. Tomoki Arichi.
